Da Nang Diary: A Forward Air Controller's Gunsight View of Combat in Vietnam
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 101.74 $THEY FLEW LOW, SLOW, AND INTO THE FACE OF ENEMY FIRE... In Vietnam, an elite group of air force pilots fought a secret air war in Cessna 0-2 and OV-10 Bronco prop planes-flying as low as they could get. The eyes and ears of the fast-moving jets who rained death and destruction down on enemy positions, the forward air controller made an art form out of an air strike-knowing the targets, knowing where friendly troops were, and reacting with split-second, life and death decisions as a battle unfolded. For Tom Yarborough, the risk was constant, intense, electrifying. A member of the super secret Prairie Fire unit, Yarborough became one of the most frequently shot-up pilots flying out of Da Nang-engaging in a series of dangerous secret missions in Laos. This is Yarborough's adrenaline-pumping chronicle of heroism, danger, and brotherhood in Vietnam. From the rescuing of downed pilots to taking out enemy positions, to the most harrowing day-long missions, here is the dedication, courage, and skill of the fliers who took the war into the enemy's backyard...

Naked in Da Nang: A Forward Air Controller in Vietnam
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 36.76 $FACs (forward air controllers) in Vietnam flew low and slow, searching for signs of an elusive enemy. Often they trolled themselves as bait for the NVA troops to try to shoot down. When a friendly unit made contact, having a FAC overhead made their day because the FACs controlled the bomb-, rocket-, and napalm-laden fast movers, fighter jets and attack aircraft whose ordnance often made the difference between life and death. They were regarded by many of their airforce and naval aviator brethren as insane, suicidal, or both. In addition to the perils of enemy fire which ranged from lucky AK-47 shots to .51 caliber machine guns and SA-7 shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles, you had to watch out to keep from being blown up in a B-52 Arc-Light strike or knocked down by friendly artillery. As the title suggests, however, Naked in Da Nang is not an angst ridden account of mortal combat. Following in the footsteps of Richard Hooker's classic M*A*S*H: A Novel About Three Army Doctors, author Jackson has a keen eye for the absurdities that abound in a combat zone. That the humor is often dark only serves to sharpen its comic edge.- These pilots were considered the "Guardian Angels" of the Vietnam ground soldier- Refers to the "unarmed" nature of FAC (Forward Air Controllers) aircraft- Low-tech aircraft that survived combat on pilot skills only

Bourbon and Bullets
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 29.62 $American soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines carried whiskey at Yorktown, Gettysburg, Manila, and Da Nang. It bolstered their courage, calmed their nerves, and treated their maladies. As a serious American whiskey drinker, John C. Tramazzo noticed how military service and whiskey went hand in hand during his service as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army. In Bourbon and Bullets Tramazzo reveals the rich and dramatic connection between bourbon and military service in America. Although others have discussed whiskey’s place in military history, Bourbon and Bullets explores the relationship between military service and some of the most notable whiskey distillers and executives working today. American servicemen Weller, Handy, Stagg, Van Winkle, and Bulleit all experienced combat before they became household names for American whiskey enthusiasts. In small towns and big cities across America, veterans of armed conflict in Panama, Somalia, Haiti, Iraq, and Afghanistan cook mash, operate stills, and push the booming industry to new heights. Bourbon and Bullets delves into the lives and military careers of these whiskey distillers and tells the story of whiskey’s role on the battlefield and in the American military community.

A Rumor of War
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 32.67 $The classic Vietnam memoir, as relevant today as it was almost thirty years ago.In March of 1965, Marine Lieutenent Philip J. Caputo landed at Da Nang with the first ground combat unit deployed to Vietnam. Sixteen months later, having served on the line in one of modern history's ugliest wars, he returned home―physically whole but emotionally wasted, his youthful idealism forever gone. A Rumor of War is more than one soldier's story. Upon its publication in 1977, it shattered America's indifference to the fate of the men sent to fight in the jungles of Vietnam. In the years since then, it has become not only a basic text on the Vietnam War but also a renowned classic in the literature of wars throughout history and, as Caputo explains, of "the things men do in war and the things war does to men." "A singular and marvelous work." ―The New York Times

Surviving the Claws of the Tiger : Foxtrot's Fight for Survival in Operation Union II, June 2, 1967 - Vietnam
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.16 $"The Que Son Valley/Basin will be controlled and held at any cost." This information was the result of intense interrogation of prisoners captured early in 1967 in the area some thirty miles southwest of Da Nang and west of Tam Ky in northern I Corps of South Vietnam known as the Que Son Basin. This was the operational area of the 2nd NVA Division of North Vietnam. The control of the basin by the communists would begin in April, 1967. The South Vietnamese and the United States Military took notice to the heightened enemy activity and began plans for large military operations in the area. The first would be code named Union. This operation would fragment the NVA 2nd Division, but not destroy it. More enemy troops were still being pumped into the area and now another large U.S. and South Vietnamese operation would be deployed on May 26, code named, Operation Union II. This is where the author's story begins. You will follow Lance Corporal John Gobrecht, a machine gun team leader attached to 2nd Platoon of Fox Company 2/5, from his departure at the An Hoa airstrip to the ridges surrounding the Que Son Basin where snipers and hills will be taken. With the operation nearing its end, Fox Company will enter a 1,000 meter-wide rice paddy where events will change the lives of everyone involved. Readers will experience the heat, see the dead and dying and the pungent smell of death. Follow Foxtrot into one of the bloodiest single day battles for an infantry company during the entire Vietnam War. Survival of Fox Company depended on the courage of so many individuals including a recipient of The Medal Of Honor. In the end you will have mixed feelings. You will be in awe of the Marines, have respect for the enemy, and may even shed a few tears. If the reader experiences these emotions, the author's goals have been accomplished. War is not glamorous, as portrayed in the movies, but a living hell that remains with you forever.

Walking Point: An Infantryman's Untold Story
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.94 $Que Son Valley is actually a large area of hills and valleys just to the west of Da Nang, Viet Nam. During the 1960s, units from the United States Marines and United States Army engaged the 2nd North Vietnamese Division in heavy and close combat. Our mission was to keep the enemy from capturing the cities of Da Nang, Tam Ky and Chu Lai and to pacify the area. We did prevent the enemy from capturing these vital cities but, the area was far from pacified. Many young, brave Americans were killed or seriously wounded in these hills and valleys in the belief they were helping the Vietnamese obtain freedom and peace. Although our altruistic beliefs might have gone astray, it was my honor serving with these fine men and women. I wrote this book in honor of them and to keep their memory alive. I hope that, when you read this book, you will understand the Vietnam Veteran better and you will understand, not the political Vietnam War, but the Vietnam War that an Infantryman lived through.
